The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced a new welfare initiative to provide healthcare support to former national team players facing medical challenges.
GFA President Kurt Okraku unveiled the GFA Foundation Player Welfare Initiative at the association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
Under the programme, the GFA will commit $50,000 each year for the next four years to support the healthcare needs of eligible former Ghana internationals.
The initiative will therefore provide a total of $200,000 in funding over the four-year period.
Mr Okraku said the programme was intended to recognise the contribution of former national team players who represented Ghana and brought pride to the country during their careers.
“Our former national team players brought immense pride and glory to Ghana through their dedication, sacrifice and service to the nation,” he said.
“Many of them continue to face significant health challenges long after their playing careers have ended, and it is only fitting that the football family stands with them during these difficult moments.”
The GFA Foundation will administer the annual allocation through a dedicated welfare mechanism aimed at assisting former national team players with qualifying healthcare needs.
The association said the initiative was one of its significant direct interventions aimed at improving the welfare of former Ghana internationals after their playing careers.
The announcement comes amid growing calls for greater support for former players, some of whom have faced financial and health difficulties after retiring from football.
