President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to complete and commission the first 700 housing units at the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project by March 2027 as government moves to revive the long-delayed development.

He said the initial target forms part of a broader plan to deliver 1,500 housing units by December 2027, with the remaining units of the 5,000-unit estate to follow.

President Mahama disclosed this during an inspection tour of the Saglemi Housing Project, where construction has resumed through a partnership between government and the private sector.

He encouraged Ghanaians interested in acquiring the houses to prepare to register when the official application portal is opened.

The President recalled that the project was initiated under the late President John Evans Atta Mills but was subsequently stalled following a change in government and legal and investigative challenges.

He said the prolonged delay also exposed the development to vandalism, resulting in the theft of electrical cables, bathroom fittings and other installations.

“Looters came in and stole everything, the cables, the wash basins, the baths, all the fittings, electrical bulbs,” he said.

According to President Mahama, government later opted for private sector participation to ensure the completion of the project, with LMI Holdings selected to lead the redevelopment.

He said the location of the estate, close to industrial centres in Tema and the Dawa Industrial Area, makes it strategically positioned to meet the housing needs of workers in those areas.

“The first phase which was the 1,500… I’m sure that by December next year that first phase of 1,500 would have been delivered and then work would have started on the extra 3,500 housing units,” he said.

The President said supporting infrastructure, including water supply and solar power facilities, was also being developed as part of the project.

He added that prospective homeowners would be able to access mortgage and loan facilities to finance their purchases.

Financial institutions, including the National Homeownership Fund, he said, were preparing financing arrangements to assist buyers with deposits and mortgage payments.

President Mahama said the financing schemes would allow beneficiaries to spread payments over an agreed period at relatively affordable interest rates.

Further information on the registration process, pricing and financing options is expected to be announced when the official portal for prospective homeowners is launched.
