Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Communications Officer, Paul Yandoh, says he is yet to recover from his defeat in the party’s regional secretary election, revealing that he exhausted his personal resources in the contest.
Mr Yandoh, who placed third in the election, said the financial demands of the campaign had left him with virtually nothing.
“I still haven’t recovered from the election loss because I used all my finances to contest the election. I have lost everything and I am down to ground zero,” he said.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Yandoh said this was his second attempt at securing a position in the NPP’s Ashanti Regional executive structure, having previously contested for Deputy Regional Secretary in 2022 but lost.
He said the latest contest was more competitive and required him to commit substantial resources to his campaign.
“It’s not even a week yet, so I am not over the loss. It’s not been easy.
“I contested for Deputy Secretary for the region in 2022 and I lost. However, this one was more competitive. I put all my resources into this,” he said.
Despite the defeat, Mr Yandoh expressed gratitude to supporters who stood by him throughout the campaign.
He said his position as Regional Communications Officer helped him connect with delegates and communicate his vision effectively.
“Due to my position as a Communications Director, I had to communicate to the people to understand and believe what I was telling them. So people accepted me,” he said.
Mr Yandoh, however, attributed part of the difficulties he encountered during the campaign to the conviction of popular NPP communicator, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
According to him, his campaign had relied heavily on Mr Wontumi’s financial support, but the latter’s legal troubles disrupted those plans.
“But the whole issue is Wontumi’s conviction. It has affected me badly. Everything was planned on him to finance me. It made the election tough for me,” he said.
Mr Yandoh nevertheless said the experience had provided him with valuable lessons and would not discourage him from remaining active in the party.
“I have learnt a lot from this experience. Going forward, I’m committed to Bawumia and will work hard to see him become the future President of Ghana,” he said.
He said the defeat should be viewed as a learning experience and called for a more deliberate approach to rebuilding and strengthening the NPP.
“The defeat doesn’t discourage me. It’s a lesson. We have to be more deliberate on the party,” he added.
Mr Yandoh secured 105 votes in the Ashanti Regional Secretary election. Francis Adomako won the contest with 492 votes, while Michael Amoah Awuku placed second with 331 votes.
