Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has accused Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin of benefiting from the current administration while portraying a different image to his supporters.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Gbande alleged that the Minority Leader enjoys privileges despite being a member of the opposition, claiming that his public statements do not reflect his actions behind the scenes.
“No opposition is enjoying like Afenyo-Markin in this NDC government. He gets up to mislead his supporters,” he alleged.
Mr Gbande’s comments follow the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, during which Mr Afenyo-Markin accused the government of engaging in political retaliation and using state institutions against opponents.
The NDC official further alleged that the Minority Leader was living comfortably under the current administration, although he did not provide specific details of the privileges he claimed Mr Afenyo-Markin was enjoying.
“He is living like an Arabian king in this government, and he knows what I am talking about,” Mr Gbande claimed.
Mr Gbande criticised some political actors for allegedly using public rhetoric to rally support while pursuing personal interests behind the scenes.
“Some people are treating politics like a business, but in the NDC, we don’t do that. You will mislead people and later benefit on the side,” he said.
He claimed that Mr Afenyo-Markin’s actions had created a gap between his public comments and private engagements.
“You have what you say in public and what you also say behind closed doors,” he added.
Mr Gbande also renewed calls for the Minority Leader to apologise to Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah for describing her as “a nobody” during the NPP’s “Democracy Under Attack” protest.
He described the comment as disrespectful and warned that a refusal to apologise would raise questions about Mr Afenyo-Markin’s values and approach to politics.
“If he refuses to apologise, it will show his training and upbringing and how he does his politics,” Mr Gbande stated.
The Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency further cautioned against making statements that demean women, stressing that political differences should not lead to disrespect.
“We don’t demean or undermine women because we all have wives and sisters at home,” he said.
