A 31-year-old woman, Stella Amedzorme, has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
The conviction was secured by the Volta North Regional Police Command after the woman pleaded guilty to the offence before the Kpando Circuit Court.
The incident occurred on July 17, 2026, when the baby’s mother, Gloria Xagbe, 21, reported to the Police that she had briefly left her eight-month-old son in the care of Amedzorme, a fellow market trader, while she went to purchase packaging bags.
However, upon returning, the mother discovered that both the woman and her child were missing.
The Police launched investigations and, through intelligence-led operations, arrested Amedzorme the following day at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region.
The baby was successfully rescued unharmed and reunited with family.
During investigations, Amedzorme reportedly admitted taking the child, claiming she acted on the instructions of her fiancé, who is currently on the run.
She was initially arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026, and remanded into Police custody.
She later appeared before the court on August 3, 2026, where she pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison.
The Police say efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest her fiancé to assist with further investigations.
The Volta North Regional Police Command has urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving children in the care of others, stressing the need for vigilance in protecting children from potential harm.
