Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team have been denied a historic bronze medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after Canada successfully overturned its disqualification following a protest.
The dramatic turn of events came just hours after Ghana had been promoted to third place following Canada’s initial disqualification by race officials.
Canada, who had originally finished second in the final, were removed from the results, allowing Nigeria to move into the silver medal position while Ghana’s quartet of Joseph Paul Amoah, Ibrahim Fuseini, Barnabas Aggerh and Benjamin Azamati were elevated from fourth to bronze.
The Ghanaian team had clocked an impressive 38.13 seconds in the final, a performance that appeared to secure the country’s first men’s 4x100m relay medal at the Commonwealth Games since 1974.
However, Canada’s successful appeal changed the outcome, with officials reinstating the North American side back into second place after reviewing the protest.
The final standings were subsequently restored, with Australia keeping the gold medal, Canada taking silver and Nigeria reclaiming the bronze medal.
Ghana therefore dropped back to fourth place, missing out narrowly on what would have been a landmark achievement and an end to a 52-year wait for a men’s 4x100m relay podium finish at the Commonwealth Games.
Despite the disappointment, the Ghanaian quartet delivered a commendable performance in Glasgow, competing strongly against some of the world’s best sprinting nations and recording a season-leading time of 38.13 seconds in the final.
