Eleven-year-old Ghanaian identical twins, Emery and Emmett Acheampong, have been laid to rest in Spain after their tragic death in the Ter River in Catalonia.
The funeral service for the twins was held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Iglesia Santa Maria, from 10:00am to 11:00am.
The 11-year-old boys were later laid to rest at the Manlleu Cemetery, where family members, friends and loved ones gathered to bid them farewell.
Mourners attending the ceremony were dressed in all white or a combination of black and white as they honoured the memory of the two brothers.
The final funeral rites were also held on the same day at Centro Civic Manlleu, located at Av. Puigmal 137-139 or Calle Torrent i Garriga 85-89, as relatives and members of the Ghanaian community in Spain came together to support the bereaved family.
The brothers, who lived with their family in Manlleu, Barcelona, drowned on July 14, 2026, in an incident authorities described as an accidental drowning.
They had left home on Monday, July 13, 2026, to play football but never returned, prompting their father to report them missing to the police later that evening.
A search operation was immediately launched by Catalan authorities, including the Mossos d’Esquadra, with support from divers and drones.
The following day, Tuesday, July 14, the bodies of the two boys were found in the Ter River, bringing a tragic end to the search.
Investigations into the incident concluded that the deaths were accidental. Authorities believe the boys entered the river to cool off but did not know how to swim, leading to the fatal outcome.
The passing of Emery and Emmett has left their family, friends and the Ghanaian community in Spain mourning the loss of the two young brothers.
Their burial ceremony was held as loved ones gathered to remember the twins and pay their final respects. The family has described them as cherished children whose lives were cut short in a heartbreaking tragedy.
