Twenty-nine members of the Ejisu Municipal Assembly have passed a vote of no confidence in the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Jerryne Asante, citing allegations of financial mismanagement, abuse of power and poor administrative leadership.
The aggrieved assembly members are also calling on President John Dramani Mahama to remove the MCE from office, claiming she lacks adequate knowledge of the country’s decentralisation system.
Addressing the media on Friday, July 24, spokesperson for the group and Assembly Member for the Kwamo Electoral Area, George Kuntu Blankson, said the decision followed what they described as the MCE’s failure to comply with directives issued by the Assembly’s Public Relations and Complaints Committee (PRCC).
According to him, the committee, after a meeting on April 30, 2026, gave Ms Asante a two-week ultimatum to address a number of concerns, but she allegedly failed to act.
Among the allegations is her failure to enforce a court order directing the demolition of part of a building said to have encroached on a public road at Akyiawkrom.
The assembly members also accused the MCE and her personal aide of allegedly diverting GH¢29,000 in property rates and business operating permit fees collected on August 1, 2025.
They alleged that the money was used to purchase 32 packets of roofing sheets for personal use instead of being paid into the Assembly’s Internally Generated Fund (IGF).
“For instance, Hon. Jerryne Asante was summoned before the Public Relations and Complaints Committee to answer some charges. The committee made recommendations and gave her two weeks to resolve them, but nothing has been done,” Mr Blankson said.
He added that the Assembly had also directed the MCE to refund the GH¢29,000, but the directive had not been complied with.
The assembly members further accused Ms Asante of disregarding the decisions of the General Assembly and creating tension within the Assembly through the alleged transfer of key departmental heads.
According to them, six heads of department and three middle-level officers have been transferred within her first year in office, a development they claim has disrupted the work of the Assembly.
They also criticised the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, accusing him of attempting to interfere in the Assembly’s internal processes.
The group alleged that the Regional Minister directed the Presiding Member to postpone the meeting scheduled to deliberate on the motion of no confidence.
However, Mr Blankson argued that under the Assembly’s Standing Orders and the Local Governance Act, only the Presiding Member has the authority to convene or postpone a General Assembly meeting.
Although the assembly members had planned to hold the meeting at the Assembly Hall, they claimed the facility remained locked, forcing them to address the media outside the premises instead.
As of the time of filing this report, the Municipal Chief Executive, Jerryne Asante, had not responded to the allegations, as she was reportedly not in the office.
