The family of the late Apostle Prof. Emeritus Ing. Kwadwo Safo, founder and leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, has accused his daughter, former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, of demanding GH¢3.7 million before allowing the burial of her father to proceed.
According to a statement issued by the family, Ms Safo is “effectively holding her father’s mortal remains to ransom” by demanding GH¢3,700,000, which her lawyers described as expenditure incurred towards the “initial preparation” of the funeral.
The allegation follows a letter dated July 21, 2026, from Ms Safo’s lawyers, Kwame Akuffo & Co. Unlimited, to the family’s legal representatives.
In the letter, counsel stated that his client was willing to cooperate with the family in organising the funeral but had already spent GH¢3.7 million on preparations. The lawyers indicated that supporting documentation for the expenditure would be made available.
The family, however, has rejected the demand, describing it as “outright extortion” and an attempt to frustrate efforts to bury the late religious leader.
In its statement, the family outlined what it described as a series of failed attempts to engage Ms Safo over the funeral arrangements.
According to the family, on June 4, 2026, Ms Safo wrote to the family’s lawyer requesting a meeting to amicably resolve matters relating to the funeral, noting that customary law required a peaceful and orderly process.
The family said after a meeting was scheduled, Ms Safo failed to attend and instead later held a press conference announcing July 30 and 31, 2026, as the burial and funeral dates.
The family further stated that on July 21, Ms Safo’s lawyers sent another letter expressing her willingness to cooperate but also included the GH¢3.7 million claim. They alleged that despite responding to the correspondence, no meeting was subsequently granted.
The family also maintained that following the reading of Apostle Kwadwo Safo’s will, an exercise they say was initiated by Ms Safo, the responsibility for the custody of the body and funeral arrangements was vested in Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, the late founder’s son.
Consequently, the family insists there is no agreement with Ms Safo regarding the funeral and has declared all burial dates previously announced by her as “null and void.”
It further announced that the funeral arrangements have been put on hold indefinitely until new dates are determined by what it describes as the lawful custodians of the burial rites, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena and the Aduana Kotoko Royal Family of Essumeja.
“The body of Apostle Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Safo shall be laid to rest with the dignity he earned in life, not held for ransom by anyone,” the family stated.
It also urged the public and members of the Kristo Asafo Mission to disregard any future funeral announcements made by Ms Safo and to treat the alleged monetary demand “with the contempt it deserves.”
The family said a new funeral programme that honours the legacy of the Kristo Asafo founder will be announced in due course.
