Aspiring Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, says he is committed to reclaiming parliamentary seats lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the previous elections if elected to lead the party in the region.
He believes this will be complemented by increased votes for the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to improve the party’s chances of regaining power from the NDC in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking after being vetted for the chairmanship position, Mr Kwaku Appiah said: “I am coming to lead the Ashanti Region so we can do everything legally possible to increase our presidential votes, increase our parliamentary seats, and win Election 2028.”
He added: “In the next three weeks, I will be the next Chairman of the NPP in the Ashanti Region. Nobody else.”
In the 2024 general elections, the NPP presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, won the Ashanti Region with approximately 1.36 million votes, representing about 65 percent of the total votes cast in the region. This was a decline from the 1.79 million votes secured by the party’s candidate in 2020.
The party also lost ten of the 47 parliamentary seats in the region.
Mr Appiah, popularly known as COKA, said his vision is to build a strong and united party with effective structures from the polling station level to the regional office.
He said his administration would prioritise collective leadership.
“We will work together. We will decide together. We will enjoy together. And yes, we will even suffer together. But most importantly, we will protect and defend our party constitution,” he said.
He added that there is a need to restore the party to its former strength, which informed his decision to take up the challenge of leading the NPP in the Ashanti Region.
Odeneho Kwaku Appiah is contesting the Ashanti Regional Chairmanship position against Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, who has also served in various capacities at the grassroots level of the NPP in the region.
