Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant Akosua Manu has called for the equal application of the law following the arrests of two outspoken critics of the government over the weekend.
In a post on X, she said her position has always been guided by fairness, due process and the impartial enforcement of the law, stressing that constitutional rights should not depend on political affiliation or public opinion.
“Two vociferous critics of this government have been arrested for different reasons over the weekend and the reactions have been very interesting.
“My position has always been guided by the same principle: fairness, due process and equal application of the law,” she wrote.
Akosua Manu insisted that the rights and freedoms of citizens must be protected regardless of their political views or public standing.
“Dennis deserves the protection of the law and so does Okatakyie. Rights and freedoms cannot be dependent on political affiliation, popularity, or whose side of the debate one happens to be on,” she added.
She also questioned what she described as inconsistencies in law enforcement, citing reports of a confrontation involving the Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) for Ga East and Ga West.
According to her, the public had legitimate concerns about whether similar urgency was being applied in addressing other incidents.
“At the same time this weekend, other incidents have received significant public attention, including reports of a confrontation involving the Ga East and Ga West MCEs. Questions have been asked about whether the law has been applied with the same urgency and consistency in every case,” she said.
“Have there been any arrests? Violent clashes with no consequence? These are legitimate questions in any democracy, especially one that promised better under the guise of a RESET,” she added.
The former parliamentary aspirant stressed that public confidence in state institutions depends on citizens seeing justice being administered fairly and without favour.
“It should not matter whether the person involved is a journalist, a political activist, a government official, or an ordinary citizen. The standard must be the same for everyone,” she said.
“That is how trust is built. That is how justice is seen to be done. And that is how we protect the democratic values we all claim to cherish,” she added.
Akosua Manu ended her post with the hashtags #FreeMiraclesNow and #FreeOkatakyieNow.
