The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the alleged arrest and detention of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, calling for transparency from the authorities.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr Nana B said Mr Aboagye was picked up by immigration officials at the Kotoka International Airport upon his arrival in the country and later handed over to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

According to him, Mr Aboagye travelled outside the country and was intercepted at the airport because authorities wanted to speak with him.

“He travelled and immigration picked him up at the airport, saying they needed him for a conversation. One of the people who was supposed to pick him up at the airport informed us that he had been arrested on Saturday evening,” he said.

Mr Nana B said immigration officials subsequently transferred Mr Aboagye to EOCO on Sunday, but attempts by his lawyers and party members to access him were unsuccessful.

“From Saturday, we started asking why he had been arrested and why his lawyers could not get access to him. I even went to EOCO, and I was told that nobody should talk to him or see him because there were orders from above,” he added.

The NPP National Organiser said party executives were expected to visit EOCO on Monday to seek answers regarding the matter.

He described Mr Aboagye as a key communicator for the party and a member of the campaign team of the NPP’s 2028 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“He speaks for the presidential candidate of the NPP. He recently declared his intention to contest for the position of Communications Director of the party, and he is one of our active and articulate communicators,” he said.

Mr Nana B said his concern was not about authorities inviting Mr Aboagye for questioning but rather the manner in which the arrest was carried out.

“My issue is not that someone cannot be invited for questioning. The concern is the way he was arrested. He travelled and was picked up at the airport. It is not as though he was invited and refused to honour the invitation,” he said.

He questioned why officials allegedly kept referring to “orders from above” when he attempted to speak with Mr Aboagye.

“I asked why they keep saying orders from above. EOCO or immigration has never had any encounter with us on this matter, and EOCO has not even issued any official statement to explain what is happening,” he added.

Mr Nana B further appealed to authorities to allow Mr Aboagye’s family and lawyers access to him.

“He is part of our family, and we need to know what is happening to him. At the very least, his family should be informed, but they have denied everyone access to him,” he said.

The comments follow a Facebook post by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, who alleged that Mr Aboagye was arrested by EOCO officers with the assistance of Immigration officials at the Kotoka International Airport.

Neither EOCO nor the Ghana Immigration Service has, at the time of publication, issued an official statement on the matter.
