Media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah was arrested on Sunday, July 12, 2026, after a disturbance temporarily disrupted voting during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constituency Executive Elections in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency.
The incident occurred in the early hours of voting when a group allegedly led by Afrifa-Mensah entered the polling centre, sparking panic among delegates, party officials and election officers.
Eyewitnesses claimed that some members of the group were carrying firearms, heightening tensions at the venue. However, those allegations have not been independently verified.
Videos circulating on social media showed a heavy deployment of armed personnel from the Ghana Police Service moving in to restore order. In one of the videos, a man identified by witnesses as Afrifa-Mensah, dressed in a green-and-black jersey with yellow stripes, was seen being escorted by police officers into the back of a police vehicle.
Several other individuals were also arrested, while some reportedly fled the scene as security personnel secured the polling centre.
Police cordoned off parts of the venue with red-and-white police tape and maintained a strong security presence to prevent any further disruption.
Following the police intervention, voting resumed under tight security and was proceeding peacefully, according to officials at the polling centre.
As of the time of publication, the Ghana Police Service had not issued an official statement confirming the arrests, the identities of those detained or any charges that may be brought against them.
Party officials appealed to delegates to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel to ensure the constituency executive elections were conducted in a peaceful, free and transparent manner.
The NPP held its Constituency Executive Elections across the country over the weekend as part of its internal reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
