Some aggrieved members of the National Democratic Congress (National Democratic Congress) in the Nkwanta North Constituency of the Oti Region have petitioned the party’s Regional and National Executive Committees following a decision by the Constituency Executive Committee to suspend scheduled branch elections.

According to the petitioners, the Constituency Executive Committee, at a meeting held on 21/06/2026, resolved to halt branch elections that had already been scheduled within the constituency.

The group argues that the move has raised concern among members and aspirants, particularly regarding adherence to due process and the party’s internal electoral calendar.

Speaking to Adom News, the convenor of the group, Wumbei Joseph, said the decision threatens internal democracy and transparency and could set an unfortunate precedent if not addressed promptly.

He questioned the authority of the Constituency Executive Committee to unilaterally stop branch elections, insisting that such a decision should be guided strictly by the party’s constitution and undertaken only after broad consultation.

Among the key issues raised in the petition are claims that members have been denied the opportunity to elect leaders at the branch level and that there was limited or no engagement with branch executives, aspirants, and the wider party membership before the suspension was announced.

The group’s spokesperson further warned that the decision, if left unresolved, could deepen mistrust, fuel disunity, and weaken party cohesion at a critical time.

Former District Chief Executive for Nkwanta North, Martin Kudor, and other party members have also expressed concern, stating that no clear constitutional, legal, or administrative justification has been communicated to members to warrant the suspension.

They contend that the absence of an official explanation has heightened suspicion and uncertainty among grassroots members.

In their petition, the members are calling on the Regional and National Executive Committees to investigate the circumstances surrounding the decision, assess its consistency with party rules, and where necessary, declare it null and void.

They are also urging party leadership to ensure that the elections proceed as scheduled, or are rescheduled by the appropriate authority in line with the party constitution.

Additionally, the petitioners are demanding safeguards to protect members’ democratic rights and preserve the credibility of the NDC’s internal electoral processes, stressing that transparent and constitutionally grounded elections remain essential for unity, legitimacy, and effective grassroots mobilisation.
