The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Public Utilities Regulatory Commission) has announced an upward adjustment in electricity and water tariffs effective July 1, 2026.

Electricity tariffs have been increased by 3.49 percent, while water tariffs have gone up by 0.85 percent.

In a statement issued on June 22, 2026, the Commission explained that the adjustments form part of its quarterly tariff review mechanism, which takes into account key operational and economic factors affecting utility service providers.

These include the exchange rate between the Ghana cedi and the US dollar, inflation trends, the electricity generation mix, and the cost of fuel, particularly natural gas used in thermal power generation.

According to PURC, the review is aimed at maintaining the real value of tariffs, ensuring the financial sustainability of utility companies, and supporting reliable service delivery, while also considering the impact on consumers.

The Commission indicated that it applied a weighted average exchange rate of GH¢11.2228 to one US dollar for the third quarter of 2026, reflecting a 0.2 percent depreciation of the cedi compared to the previous quarter.

It also used a three-month average inflation rate of 3.43 percent, down from 4.17 percent in the previous quarter, and a weighted average natural gas cost of US$7.9708 per MMBtu, representing a 1.58 percent decrease.

Based on these indicators, PURC approved a 3.49 percent increase in electricity tariffs across all customer categories for the third quarter of 2026.

Water tariffs were also adjusted upward by 0.85 percent, with the Commission attributing the change to the same macroeconomic factors influencing production and distribution costs.

The Commission expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their cooperation in implementing the quarterly tariff review system and assured consumers that it will continue to monitor utility providers to ensure improved service delivery and value for money.
