Tears and deep grief have enveloped Ujari village as the remains of late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo arrived in his hometown for his final burial rites on June 18, 2026
Following a solemn all-white Service of Songs held in Lagos last week and an emotional wake-keeping ceremony the night before, well-wishers are now gathered in Arochukwu as the actor is laid to rest.
The quiet town stood still as a motorcade carrying the actor’s casket pulled into his father’s residence, where he is expected to be interred in the ancestral ground.
Guests and mourners are dressed in white, symbolising peace and a celebration of a life widely described as loving and impactful.
A strong delegation from the Nigerian film industry has arrived including IK Ogbonna, Ini Edo, Omoni Oboli, Obi Cubana, Bolaji Ogunmola, Bimbo Ademoye, Nancy Isime and Venita Akpofure, who have all joined in offering emotional support.
The atmosphere has been heavy, with moments of visible grief, including his sister breaking down during the early rites.
Alexx Ekubo, affectionately known as “Chief Ikuku,” passed away on May 11, 2026, after a private battle with metastatic kidney cancer.
He rose to fame as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria pageant and went on to become one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces across African cinema.
Beyond acting, he was admired as a humanitarian and fashion icon who consistently supported youth empowerment.
