Aspiring National Chairman of the opposition NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, says his popularity is natural and dates back to his birth, insisting that he has never had to manufacture public attention.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, the politician popularly known as Chairman Wontumi recounted his early life experiences and long-standing connection to politics.

According to him, he was raised in an environment deeply rooted in the United Party (UP) political tradition, which later evolved into the New Patriotic Party.

“Where we come from geographically, ethnically and socially, we are largely from the UP party,” he said.

Wontumi recalled participating in political activities from a young age, including assisting during the 1992 referendum period.

“When I was young, on Saturdays I would go and do trotro mate work. In 1992 during the referendum, I remember I used my father’s car to pack and distribute campaign materials, so I have a fair idea of politics,” he stated.

He also spoke about his days at Prempeh College, where he said he was inspired to join the school cadet corps and eventually rose to the rank of Warrant Officer Class One.

Sharing a personal story about his birth, Wontumi claimed his popularity began from the day he was born.

He narrated that his mother gave birth to him unexpectedly at a crossroads before reaching a health facility, attracting the attention of many people in the area.

“When my mom was going to give birth to me, she reached a crossroads and I just came out of her womb. She didn’t even go into labour. I was put in a nearby lotto kiosk and everyone heard about it,” he recounted.

The NPP national chairman hopeful said the story of his birth became widely known in his community and contributed to his popularity.

“My popularity came from birth. I don’t fake it,” he said.
