The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to petition the Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, on Friday, May 22, over what it describes as alleged misconduct by the judge who presided over Circuit Court 9 in the case involving the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC).

According to the party, the move follows what it considers unfair treatment of Abronye during the proceedings, particularly his remand into custody for nine days.

The General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, announced this while addressing the media after the High Court granted Abronye bail on Thursday, May 21, 2026, following his arrest and detention in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on May 13.

The Accra High Court granted the outspoken politician bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.

Mr. Kodua confirmed that the petition seeks to demand a formal investigation into the judge’s conduct, maintaining that the circumstances of the case did not justify detention and that bail should have been granted from the outset.

The NPP insists that Abronye’s remand was unnecessary and amounted to an abuse of judicial discretion, alleging that the judge’s handling of the case appeared prejudicial and unfair toward the outspoken politician.

Abronye is currently standing trial on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news. The charges stem from comments he allegedly made against a Circuit Court judge in a viral social media video.

The case has generated political debate, with the NPP alleging targeting of its members, while the prosecution insists it remains a straightforward criminal matter before the court.
