Former Presidential Advisor on Health to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Anthony Nsiah-Asare, has expressed concern over what he describes as the government’s lack of commitment to the completion of the Agenda 111 hospital projects.
According to him, many of the hospital projects initiated under the previous administration have been abandoned and left exposed to deterioration due to delays in completion.
Speaking on Burning Issues on Adom FM, Dr. Nsiah-Asare questioned the government’s priorities, especially at a time it is pursuing the establishment of 24-hour economy markets across districts.
“If you are building 24-hour economy markets in all districts, how can you say Agenda 111 is not important?” he quizzed.
He noted that several Agenda 111 hospital projects were at various stages of completion before the Akufo-Addo administration left office, with three facilities fully completed and equipped.
According to him, despite the completion of those hospitals, operations at the facilities have stalled under the current administration.
Dr. Nsiah-Asare acknowledged the government’s implementation of the free primary healthcare programme but argued that resources allocated to the initiative could have been directed toward completing the Agenda 111 projects.
“The free primary healthcare policy is good, but government could have diverted some of the money to complete Agenda 111,” he stated.
He further disclosed that some medical equipment procured for the hospital projects remain stored at a Ministry of Health warehouse at Spintex, raising concerns over delays in operationalising the facilities.
Agenda 111 remains the largest healthcare infrastructure initiative in Ghana’s history. Introduced in 2020, the programme was designed to bridge the country’s healthcare infrastructure gap through the construction of modern hospitals in districts and regions across the country to improve access to quality healthcare services.
