The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie, has called on government to expedite the release of funds to support Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, warning that delays could undermine the country’s readiness.
With just over two months to the start of the Games in July, Akpokavie says financial clearance is still pending, leaving the GOC and its member associations struggling to adequately prepare athletes for the global event.
“This year, we are expected to prepare athletes for both the Commonwealth Games and the Youth Olympics, yet we are still awaiting funding,” he told members at the GOC Annual General Meeting on Saturday.
He announced that Ghana will send a contingent of 40 athletes to Glasgow, alongside officials including coaches, medical personnel, safeguarding officers and a Chef de Mission.
The figure represents a significant reduction compared to the country’s delegation at the previous Games in Birmingham.
“We understand the broader economic challenges facing all sectors. However, we respectfully appeal for the release of the limited funds approved for sports,” Akpokavie added.
Ghana is expected to compete in athletics, boxing, judo, para-athletics, para-powerlifting, para-swimming and weightlifting.
