WORKERS’ DAY ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF IET-GH
1st May – International Workers’ Day
Distinguished engineers, cherished colleagues, and hardworking men and women across Ghana,
Today, we join the global community to celebrate International Workers’ Day—a day set aside to honour the resilience, dedication, and invaluable contributions of workers who form the backbone of every thriving society.
As President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), I am both honoured and proud to stand before a community of professionals whose work silently but powerfully shapes the world around us.
From the roads we travel, the buildings we occupy, the energy that powers our industries, to the systems that sustain our daily lives—engineers remain at the very heart of national development.
This day is not merely a celebration; it is a moment of reflection.
It is a reminder that behind every completed project lies sacrifice—long hours, demanding conditions, and the constant pursuit of excellence.
It reminds us that engineering is not just a profession; it is a responsibility to society. A responsibility to ensure safety, sustainability, and progress.
To all engineers across Ghana—whether in the public or private sector, in academia, industry, or on the field—I commend your unwavering commitment.
Your role in safeguarding lives through sound engineering practices, especially in an era where infrastructure failures pose real risks, cannot be overstated.
Your diligence protects communities, preserves investments, and builds the future we all aspire to.
However, today also calls for honesty.
While we celebrate, we must acknowledge the challenges confronting workers—limited resources, safety concerns, inadequate recognition, and, at times, difficult working environments.
As professionals and as leaders, we must not shy away from advocating for improved working conditions, stricter adherence to engineering standards, and policies that prioritize both worker welfare and public safety.
For the engineering community, this is a call to action.
Let us continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethics. Let us resist complacency and reject mediocrity in all its forms.
Let us be bold in speaking up when standards are compromised, and courageous in defending what is right—even when it is inconvenient.
To the younger generation of engineers, I say this: the future of our profession rests in your hands. Equip yourselves not only with technical knowledge but also with integrity, discipline, and a deep sense of purpose. Ghana needs engineers who are not only competent but also principled.
To government and stakeholders, we extend a respectful appeal: invest in engineering capacity, enforce regulatory frameworks, and create an enabling environment where professionals can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Fellow workers, across all sectors—today is your day.
Whether you are in construction, healthcare, education, agriculture, or services, your labour matters. Your contribution counts. And your dignity must always be protected.
As we celebrate, let us renew our commitment to building a nation where hard work is rewarded, excellence is recognized, and safety is never compromised.
On behalf of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana, I wish all workers a happy and fulfilling Workers’ Day.
Let us continue to build, to innovate, and to serve with purpose.
Thank you, and may God bless our work and our nation.
Happy Workers’ Day.
