Ghana’s efforts to stabilise its power supply have gained significant momentum, with five out of six generation units at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant now fully restored and feeding into the national grid.

Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor confirmed that the fifth unit has been successfully commissioned and is operating smoothly, describing the development as a major milestone in the ongoing recovery process.

According to him, the startup of the unit was executed without complications, reflecting strong coordination among engineers and technical teams working to restore operations at the facility.

The latest progress comes just days after a fire outbreak severely damaged the plant’s substation control room, disrupting power evacuation and forcing emergency load management across several regions.

The incident had triggered widespread outages, affecting homes and businesses, particularly in parts of Accra, Ashanti, Central and Tema regions.

With five units now operational, the Ministry of Energy says the grid has reached a critical halfway point in its recovery, a development expected to significantly ease the pressure on electricity supply nationwide.

Officials indicate that the additional capacity is already contributing to improved stability and a gradual reduction in outages in affected areas.

Engineers are currently focused on restoring the final unit, with authorities expressing confidence that full operational capacity at the plant could be achieved by the end of the week.

The restoration of Akosombo’s full generation capacity is expected to further stabilise the national grid and strengthen power reliability as demand continues to grow.
