Ghanaian musician Kelvyn Boy has sparked conversation after expressing his frustration with how he now views church, saying it no longer appeals to him the way it used to.
In an interview on Joy Prime’s PrimeTime, the Afrobeat artiste said his distance from church is not due to a “fight with God,” but rather his personal observations about how modern-day church services and conduct have changed.
According to him, both church leaders and congregants have contributed to his changing perception, pointing to what he describes as inconsistencies in behaviour and practice.
He argued that while there are genuine pastors doing good work, there are also aspects of leadership and conduct within the church that, in his view, fall short of expectations.
Kelvyn Boy also raised concerns about how some church members behave outside and even inside the church environment, including judgmental attitudes based on appearance and social status.
“I feel like pastors should share what they get and support people but I don’t see that like that. And then the churchgoers, what they would do right after church or before church. The way they move, the way they react to things, the way they receive people, and the way they do services. They even judge you with your appearance,” he said.
He suggested that such experiences have influenced his current outlook, adding that the overall structure and experience of church has, in his view, lost its essence.
The former SDA member, however, said he would reconsider his position if there are changes in how Christianity is practised and structured.
