The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare-Kwakye, has appealed to government, traditional leaders, and relevant authorities to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

He said the devastating impact of galamsey on the environment, water bodies, and livelihoods calls for urgent and collective action from all stakeholders. According to him, the fight against illegal mining should not be politicised but treated as a national priority.

The Moderator also criticised some politicians for verbally attacking clergy members who have openly spoken against illegal mining. He stressed that religious leaders have a moral responsibility to speak on national issues and should not be insulted for advocating environmental protection.

“We cannot sit unconcerned while our lands and water bodies are destroyed. Those who speak the truth, especially the clergy, must be supported and not insulted,” he said.

He made the remarks during the 8th Congregation Ceremony at the Presbyterian University, Ghana (PUG), Abetifi Campus, where he also encouraged graduates to become agents of positive change in society.

Rt. Rev. Dr Opare-Kwakye further called for unity among all stakeholders in addressing the galamsey menace to safeguard the country’s natural resources for future generations.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor John Ofosu-Anim, urged the graduates to confront societal challenges and apply the knowledge acquired during their training to help find solutions and contribute to national development.
