The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South in the Oti Region, Joseph Awal Antwi, has expressed concern over the gradual decline of football and other sporting activities in the municipality, attributing the situation to the ongoing conflict in the area.

According to the MCE, the persistent disturbances have disrupted training routines and competitive matches, forcing many talented children and young athletes to relocate.

He warned that without stability, gifted players who require consistent coaching, discipline, and competitive exposure to develop their skills risk losing their potential.

Joseph Antwi, a former sports journalist, made the remarks during the second-round 3rd Division league match between Nkwanta All Stars and Monaco FC at the late Joe Tetteh Coffie Sports Stadium in Nkwanta.

As part of efforts to motivate and support grassroots football, he donated two sets of footballs and jerseys to both teams.

Before the start of the league, the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly had already provided GH¢5,000 to each participating club to support preparations and help sustain sports development in the area.

The match ended in a goalless draw (0–0), a result that keeps qualification hopes alive for other clubs competing for promotion into the 2nd Division.

In an address to players, officials, and supporters, the MCE appealed to residents to see sports as a platform for unity and reconciliation, stressing that peace remains essential to rebuilding the municipality’s sporting culture.

He added that, through the Member of Parliament, Geoffrey Kini, Nkwanta South is expected to benefit from astroturf pitches, a development anticipated to boost football and other sporting disciplines.

Nkwanta South, once widely regarded as a stronghold of football talent, has produced notable players such as Vincent Atinga, Emmanuel Keyeke, Joseph Mireku, among others.

The MCE noted that the municipality can reclaim its reputation and restore vibrant sporting activities if lasting peace is achieved.

Some players and coaches who spoke to Adom News commended the MCE for his continuous support, describing the conflict as a significant setback to football development.

They also appealed to residents to embrace peace, emphasizing its importance for youth development, community cohesion, and the future of sports in Nkwanta South.
