The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is taking steps to prepare the country for the upcoming rainy season following forecasts of heavy rainfall by the Ghana Meteorological Agency.
As part of these preparations, officials from NADMO have begun inspecting major drainage systems in Accra to assess their condition and identify measures needed to reduce the risk of flooding.
The inspection exercise started at the drains in Achimota, where NADMO’s Director-General, Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, explained that the initiative forms part of the organisation’s proactive approach to disaster preparedness.
He noted that the exercise is intended to ensure the country is adequately positioned to respond to potential flooding once the rains intensify.
“This is not the first time we are coming here. Last year, we were here with the President of the country himself to have a look at flashpoints of flooding in Accra,” he said.
“I have continuously, on many platforms, said that my administration’s focus is not to react to disasters only. Disaster management is a process. It starts from working to prevent it and putting ourselves in readiness, should any disaster occur. So it is a process and not just an event,” he stated.
During the visit, the NADMO Director-General also observed progress on ongoing works along the Achimota drainage channel, indicating that efforts are underway to improve the system’s capacity to handle heavy rainfall.
Dr. Kuyon assured residents living in flood-prone areas that NADMO is fully prepared and working closely with other relevant state agencies to minimise the impact of flooding during the rainy season.
“We’ve been working behind the scenes, which is mostly not catching the media eye because it’s not bad news. It only becomes public when the disaster strikes. But our focus is to work to ensure that disasters don’t happen,” he added.
The inspection tour is expected to continue in other parts of the capital as officials assess additional drainage systems and monitor ongoing flood prevention measures.
