The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed it will enforce a High Court directive barring the planned “Stop Galamsey” demonstration scheduled for Friday, February 27, 2026.
The prohibition order was granted on February 24, with the court citing concerns about public order and safety. The police noted that the timing of the protest — coinciding with the State of the Nation Address — presents potential security challenges.
In a statement issued on February 26, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command addressed social media claims by the protest organisers that they had not been formally served with the court order, maintaining that due process had been followed.
“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to inform the general public that a High Court in Accra, on 24th February 2026, granted an order prohibiting the conveners of the ‘Stop Galamsey’ demonstration from holding the planned protest on Friday, 27th February 2026.
“The order, which was duly served on the conveners, prohibits the demonstration on the said date in the interest of public order and safety, particularly as it coincides with the State of the Nation Address.”
Although the protest cannot take place on the scheduled date, the police indicated that discussions are possible to reschedule the event.
“However, in line with the Court’s directive, the police remain open to engaging the conveners to agree on a mutually convenient date for the demonstration, in accordance with the Public Order Act.
“The Accra Regional Police Command urges the general public to comply with the court order and avoid any actions that may lead to breaches of the peace.”
The Command reiterated its call for calm and urged all parties to adhere strictly to the court’s directive.
