Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo maintained his fine early form at Manchester City by finding the net in their EFL Cup first-leg victory over Newcastle United on Tuesday night.

The 26-year-old, who recently joined Pep Guardiola’s side from fellow Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth, had opened his City account at the weekend with a goal against Exeter City in the FA Cup third round.

City travelled to St James’ Park for the first leg of the EFL Cup tie, with both sides locked in a goalless stalemate at the break.

Semenyo thought he had broken the deadlock eight minutes into the second half, but his effort was ruled out following a VAR review.

The Ghana international, however, made amends in stoppage time, playing a key role as Rayan Cherki struck a superb second goal to secure a 2-0 away win for the reigning champions.

Semenyo has now become the first player to score in each of his first two appearances for Manchester City in all competitions since Emmanuel Adebayor achieved the feat in August 2009.

The result gives City a commanding advantage ahead of the return leg, scheduled for next week at the Etihad Stadium.
