The Chief Executive Officer of the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA), Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, says the previously unregulated tree crops sector is undergoing major reforms under the Mahama administration.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Dr. Okrah revealed that while not all structures are fully in place, the Authority is rapidly operationalising its legal mandate.
“When we came, we had to move quickly to put structures in place, including zonal offices,” he said.
He noted that the TCDA recently opened its first zonal office in Tamale, with additional offices in Kumasi for the middle belt and in Wenchi. District-level offices will soon be operationalised to strengthen nationwide oversight.
Dr. Okrah described the sector as previously functioning like a “free-for-all market,” but said significant changes are now being implemented.
“If you don’t have a licence, you can’t trade,” he stressed, adding that strict licensing is essential to regulate the value chain and ensure compliance.
He further explained that the Authority is focusing on value addition and creating an environment where local industries can thrive.
“Our focus is on adding value to support the growth of local industries,” he said.
