The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed concern over the state of youth football and Ghana’s domestic league, citing persistent challenges with competition quality and funding.
Over the years, the local game has struggled to attract sponsorship, largely due to inconsistencies and a lack of competitiveness.
Ahead of the 2025/26 season, the government, in partnership with Adesa Production Limited, provided each Premier League club with GH¢1 million to support the commencement of the campaign.
Speaking on Peace FM, Mr. Adams acknowledged the hurdles facing the sport, noting that both financial and organizational issues continue to affect football development in the country.
“I am not too impressed with the Colts, and even by extension, our local league, but it is step by step. Funding has been a big challenge for the league. Sometimes, when the season ends, the money that should be given to them becomes a problem,” he said.
He further revealed that, following directives from President John Mahama, a system has been instituted to ensure that clubs receive timely financial assistance to begin the season.
“Today, as I speak to you, through the directives of the President, we have put a system in place that has enabled us to give every club a million Ghana cedis to start the league with,” the Buem MP added.
