Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has dismissed international media reports claiming that the United States plans to deport a Salvadorian national, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, to Ghana.
Several international outlets on Friday, October 10, 2025, reported that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had notified Abrego Garcia’s attorneys of plans to deport him to Ghana.
The reports also noted that DHS had earlier considered deporting him to Eswatini and Uganda after he was mistakenly deported to El Salvador and later returned to the United States.
However, in a Facebook post, Mr. Ablakwa clarified that Ghana will not receive Abrego Garcia, emphasizing that the position has been clearly communicated to U.S. authorities.
He stated that Ghana’s agreement with the United States allows for the acceptance of only non-criminal West African nationals—and only under humanitarian and solidarity considerations.
“In my interactions with U.S. officials, I made clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles, would not be expanded,” he explained.
“Ghana strongly objects to these misleading media reports,” the minister added.
