Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, says the GH₵1 million support package earmarked for each club ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season will not be enough to curb the player exodus.

The financial support comes through a partnership between Adesa Production Limited and the GFA, backed by the Government of Ghana, in an effort to boost local football.

However, Afriyie believes the amount falls short of addressing the economic realities players face.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, he stated, “The money is not enough to retain players in the league.”

He compared salaries across other African leagues, highlighting the disparity: “In Ethiopia, players earn about $2,500; in Tanzania, they make between $2,500 and $3,000; and in Sudan, salaries are close to $5,000.”

Afriyie added that stakeholders must shift focus towards making the domestic league more financially attractive if they hope to retain top talent.

“So, offering someone 5,000 Ghana cedis is simply not enough to compete with these leagues.

“These are the things we should be thinking about if we want to make our league attractive.”

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season is set to kick off on the weekend of September 12.
