Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances ahead of their must-win clash against Mali in the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Queens are under growing pressure following a 2-0 defeat to reigning champions South Africa in their opening Group C match — a result that leaves them bottom of the table.
Despite the setback, Björkegren believes his side showed enough promise against Banyana Banyana to approach their next game with confidence.
“We hit the bar twice and had more shots, more corners. We were pushing till the end. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but we played well against a strong team,” he said.
Looking ahead to the tie against Mali — who need just a point to secure progression — the Swedish tactician maintained that Ghana will approach the game with an aggressive mindset.
“Mali may only need a point to qualify, but our mentality is to win every game, whether it’s the group stage or the final. We’ve studied Mali closely, but we believe in our style and ability,” Björkegren added.
The decisive Group C encounter will be played at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Morocco today, Thursday, July 11, with kick-off set for 16:00 GMT.
