Queen Mothers in Nkwanta South, Oti Region, are pleading with health workers to return to their posts after fleeing due to escalating insecurity from recent violent clashes.
The conflict, which has claimed over seven lives—including a third-year student of Nkwanta Senior High School—has left several others with gunshot wounds and caused significant property damage.
As tensions persist, hospitals in the municipality, including Nkwanta Municipal Government Hospital and St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital, have suspended operations to protect their staff.
During a visit to the affected health facilities, the queen mothers expressed deep concern over the violence’s impact on the community. They called on the warring factions to lay down their arms and restore peace, allowing health workers to safely resume essential services.
“Our people are suffering. Women and children are the hardest hit by this conflict, and it is stalling our community’s development,” said Ohema Nyarkoa Onyukiline, speaking on behalf of the traditional leaders.
Rev. Sister Lydia Nyarko Yeboah, Nursing Manager at St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital, and Dr. Julius Nii Darko Wellington, Acting Medical Superintendent at Nkwanta Municipal Government Hospital, expressed frustration over the unsafe environment that forced many staff to leave.
They joined the queen mothers’ appeal, urging all parties involved to prioritize peace so healthcare delivery can resume for the benefit of the entire community.
