COVID-19 resurgence nationwide, not just Legon – Virologist warns [Audio]

A Senior Research Fellow and Head of Virology at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Professor Kofi Bonney, has revealed that Ghana’s resurging COVID-19 cases are more widespread than officially reported.

His comments follow the confirmation of a new wave of COVID-19 infections by the University of Ghana on Monday, June 23, 2025, where 107 cases were confirmed out of 316 suspected infections.

Prof. Bonney, however, indicated that the resurgence is not limited to the university campus.

“Legon is just a small community in Ghana, and people from there always move around. People sit in cars to move around and cough. So even if we have confirmed cases there, people shouldn’t think they can’t be affected,” he warned.

He advised Ghanaians to resume observing basic COVID-19 safety protocols, including wearing of nose masks, handwashing, social distancing, and avoiding contact with those showing symptoms.

According to Prof. Bonney, Noguchi’s National Influenza Centre has observed a general rise in respiratory infections during this rainy season, including COVID-19.

“We have hospitals that bring samples to the facility, and over the years, we have observed that influenza-like illness goes up during the rainy seasons,” he said.

“Cases may have been recorded in Legon, but there are a lot of cases being reported in all the 16 regions of Ghana. I believe that the Ghana Health Service (GHS) will, in due course, provide an update on all of the cases recorded nationwide,” he added.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that the government is taking steps to secure COVID-19 vaccines locally in anticipation of further spread.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and individuals with underlying medical conditions.
