CJ Protest: Police invite Afenyo-Markin over alleged assault of officer

-

The Ghana Police Service has officially written to the Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of the Majority Leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to assist with investigations into an alleged assault on a police officer during a recent public demonstration.

The move follows the review of video footage from the protest, which has since gone viral on social media, allegedly showing the MP involved in a physical altercation with a police officer.

The incident reportedly occurred during a politically charged demonstration organized by opposition and civil society groups over the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In a statement released by the Police on Saturday, May 5, 2025, the Service confirmed that preliminary analysis of multiple video recordings warranted a formal investigation.

The Police emphasized that the probe aims to ensure professionalism, accountability, and justice for all parties involved.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to transparency and impartiality in handling the matter and urged the public to remain calm while the investigation proceeds.
