About 500 unauthorised wooden structures have been demolished at the Bayakasua slum behind the COCOBOD building in Kumasi during a major enforcement exercise by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).
The operation, which commenced at about 6:30 a.m. was aimed at reclaiming public land as well as improving sanitation within the metropolis.
The exercise was led by the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, with support from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, Metro Guards, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Limited.
According to the Assembly, the Bayakasua settlement had become a hotspot for criminal activities, including the sale and abuse of illicit drugs, robbery, prostitution and illegal utility connections.
As part of the operation, the Electricity Company of Ghana recovered about 100 illegally connected electricity meters, while Ghana Water Limited disconnected illegal water connections and repaired damaged pipelines within the area.
The demolition exercise was carried out without any casualties or resistance from occupants.
The KMA said it remains committed to enforcing planning regulations, protecting public infrastructure and creating a cleaner, safer and more orderly city through sustained enforcement operations.
