Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey is expected to appear before a Canadian Federal Court on Tuesday in a last-ditch effort to overturn a visa denial that has prevented him from joining the Black Stars ahead of their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The former Arsenal midfielder was refused entry into Canada last week because of ongoing legal proceedings in the United Kingdom, where he faces multiple rape charges and one count of assault. The 33-year-old has pleaded not guilty to all allegations.

The hearing, scheduled for 13:00 GMT, will see Partey challenge the Canadian government’s decision in the hope of securing clearance to enter the country and link up with Ghana’s squad in Toronto.

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has confirmed that the player will formally appeal the ruling and expressed optimism that the court could decide in his favour.

Should the appeal succeed, Partey is expected to travel immediately to Canada and join the Black Stars camp ahead of their Group L opener against Panama on Wednesday at BMO Field.

The Government of Ghana, through its embassy in Canada, is reportedly supporting the player’s efforts to gain entry, with officials keen to ensure he is available for the national team’s World Cup campaign.

Partey’s absence was noticeable when the Ghana squad arrived in Toronto on Monday to complete final preparations for the tournament. His experience and influence are considered crucial as the four-time African champions seek to progress beyond the group stage.

The midfielder has been charged with seven counts of rape and one count of assault relating to allegations made by four women over incidents said to have occurred between 2020 and 2022. A trial is expected to take place later this year. Partey has consistently denied all allegations against him.

Ghana will begin their World Cup journey against Panama before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. The Black Stars will then conclude their Group L campaign against Croatia on June 27 as they aim to secure a place in the knockout rounds.
