‘Y’asem Nie’, a new segment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem today featured traders from Accra Central who are losing money due to the invasion of Chinese traders.

The segment is a non-partisan platform for ‘ordinary Ghanaians’ to express their views on pressing national issues and also share their grievances for redress.

The distraught traders bemoaned how their businesses were on the verge of collapse due to unfair competition from their Chinese counterparts.

A wholesaler, who owns a shop in Accra, Mary Owusu, disclosed how her Chinese partners had opened shops in Ghana and were busily engaging in retail business.

She said they bring the goods and sell them cheap to people who hitherto were her biggest customers.

“I own a big shop in Accra but now I’m reeling in debt due to activities by the Chinese,” she narrated in despair.

Another trader, Kofi Oduro, who is a retailer, said he could no longer take care of his family due to lack of sales.

“I don’t sell anything when I open my shop and it is affecting my family. I can’t even take care of my family,” he stated in Twi.

Delis Nyamekye and Christiana Donkor, both traders also said they were unable to pay their loans and the banks were after them.

They warned that if the illegal activities of the foreigners are not stopped, future survival of Ghana’s local businesses could be threatened.

The aggrieved traders appealed to President Nana Akufo-Addo to exhibit the same zeal and commitment in fighting illegal mining to protect local traders to ensure that Chinese nationals comply with the GIPC Act 865 which allows foreign nationals to engage in manufacturing and wholesale business in Ghana only.
