Former Minister of Education, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang is praying for the sustainability of the free Senior High School (SHS) policy rolled out by the Akufo-Addo led government.

She said any policy geared towards securing the future generation will have the full support of all well-meaning Ghanaians.

But Prof. Opoku Agyemang’s only point of departure was that the current free SHS being implemented was not what President Akufo-Addo promised in the 2016 electioneering campaign.

At least over 400,000 students are expected to benefit from the programme, launched on Tuesday.

The programme, which is an outcome of a campaign promise, will make an admission, examination, library and science laboratory fees free for junior high school (JHS) graduates who qualify for SHS.

Though the process has suffered some setbacks, government has been praised by parents and other civil society groups for fulfilling the flagship campaign promise.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang questioned why the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) had promised Ghanaians a free SHS on a universal basis but only first year students are benefiting.

In his view, the policy currently being implemented is a progressively free SHS started by the erstwhile Mahama administration.

The former Education Minister was also skeptical about the sustainability of the policy which there is no blue print stipulating the funding mechanism for its flagship policy.

Prof Opoku Agyemang cautioned government to depoliticize the issue and include their policies in the programme in the interest of Ghana.

  1. What did she do when her government was in power? Surprised at some of the comments coming from supposed educated and learned people of Ghana.

When you meet empty coffers like what NDC left behind while still trying to grab bauxite mining concessions, you do not expect to conjure money from above to implement fully what you want your children to have no matter how hard you try. Give this programme a chance to develop into a full blown initiative and stop whining people!

  2. Jehovah witness people must not enjoy free shs .this is because they don’t vote and they don’t wish the well being of the country ….

It is compulsory for every Christian to vote by hook or crook.

So for Jehovah people,, they must not enjoy some of the free shs if truely, truely don’t vote during election..

I pray God help we all..
