Newly elected National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has rejected claims that the party is financially broke, arguing that the party has enough members and resources to raise funds when necessary.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Boadu said he had not yet had access to the party’s financial records because the previous administration was yet to formally hand over.
“I haven’t looked into the accounts of the party. The previous administration hasn’t handed over yet for us to look into the records,” he said.
He, however, said the NPP’s large membership base means the party should be capable of mobilising the resources needed to run its activities.
“But a party with over four million supporters can never be broke,” he said.
Mr Boadu cited the financial support he received during his campaign for the national chairmanship position as an indication of the willingness of party supporters and sympathisers to contribute when given the opportunity.
“Even on my own, in the course of the campaign, the financial support that came in and helped was not small,” he said.
According to him, the issue may not necessarily be a lack of resources but the party’s approach to mobilising them.
“We’re probably not doing what we need to do,” he said.
Mr Boadu further pointed to the presence of wealthy individuals, farmers and business owners within the NPP, saying the party could tap into that network to strengthen its finances.
“When we talk about rich and business people in Ghana, they are NPP. Wealthy farmers and people who own thriving businesses, they are all NPP members,” he said.
He questioned why the party should struggle to raise funds given the resources available among its membership.
“So what kind of money can’t we raise if we want to? It will not be difficult to raise funds or contributions,” he said.
Mr Boadu stressed that the focus should be on finding effective ways to mobilise resources rather than accepting the perception that the party is financially constrained.
“We need to be resourceful as a party, and that is the most important thing,” he said.
