The government is preparing a comprehensive regeneration programme for the Agbogbloshie enclave, aimed at restoring the environment while creating new industrial and housing opportunities in the area.

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, disclosed this on Monday, October 5, during the Government Accountability Series.

He said the redevelopment would begin with the systematic clearing of waste and restoration of the degraded environment before the construction of industrial and residential facilities.

According to Mr Ayariga, government is also exploring the development of low-cost housing within the enclave to ensure that workers can live close to their places of employment.

“The Ministry will pursue a comprehensive programme of environmental restoration and create employment opportunities, particularly for young people,” he said.

Mr Ayariga explained that the initiative forms part of government’s broader strategy to promote local economic development while tackling persistent environmental and urban planning challenges in the Agbogbloshie area.

He added that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies would be supported to identify economically viable areas capable of attracting investment, expanding economic activity and creating jobs.

The Minister said the regeneration programme is expected to combine environmental restoration with economic development, ensuring that the redevelopment of Agbogbloshie benefits residents and creates sustainable livelihood opportunities.
