The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has expressed gratitude to Corporate Ghana and individuals who have contributed millions of cedis to support the initiative.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam, Mrs Darko-Opoku revealed that the Fund has received significant financial and material support since its establishment, describing the response as encouraging.

“I am grateful to Corporate Ghana for their support and donations to the fund,” she said.

According to her, since September 2025, companies and institutions have donated about GH¢6.8 million to support the Medical Trust Fund.

“This year alone, we are counting almost GH¢6 million to GH¢7 million in donations,” she disclosed.

She also praised government appointees and President John Dramani Mahama for personally contributing to the initiative.

“The one-month salaries of presidential staffers were deducted in bits, and President Mahama also added his six months’ salary, totalling GH¢6.1 million from the presidency alone,” she stated.

Mrs Darko-Opoku said the President’s contribution demonstrates his commitment to the success of the programme.

“So if the President was not committed to the Medical Trust Fund, I don’t think he would have made this investment. Even the decision to roll out this initiative is very bold and ambitious,” she noted.

She expressed optimism that the government would continue exploring sustainable funding options for the Fund.

“I believe within the next year, he would look for alternatives to secure direct funding for MahamaCares,” she added.

The Administrator also recounted how some individuals have quietly made generous donations without seeking publicity.

“There was this man who came and donated GH¢200,000 and asked us not to publicise it or even take photos of him. We gave him the receipt and letter, and he left,” she revealed.

“Another woman also came to donate GH¢50,000,” she added.

Mrs Darko-Opoku stressed that the donations have been voluntary and not the result of pressure or public appeals.

“It is not as if we are going about begging people, but they are generously donating,” she said.

She further disclosed that some organisations have donated medical equipment instead of cash, explaining that the Fund has identified health facilities in need and distributed the items accordingly.

“There are tax rebates for corporate organisations donating to us. Some organisations have donated equipment, and we have identified facilities that need them and distributed the items,” she explained.
