The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has raised concerns over the delay in commissioning the newly built children’s hospital at Gbawe, suggesting possible political interference.
Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM, Mr. Shaib stated that the facility has been ready for use for nearly eight months but is yet to be officially opened.
According to him, the 120-bed capacity hospital is fully equipped and operationally ready, with all necessary installations completed.
“I am beginning to ask whether this delay is political because the project was initiated during the Nana Akufo-Addo administration. Not everything should be politicised,” he said.
He further revealed that despite assurances from officials, including the Minister and the Head of Infrastructure, that the facility would be commissioned, the process has stalled without any clear explanation.
Mr. Shaib stressed that the project, funded with support from the World Bank, is critical to improving healthcare delivery for children in the area.
“The people are interested in their health, and I am interested in the health of my constituents. So why the delay?” he questioned.
His comments come after residents of Weija-Gbawe staged a protest on Tuesday, May 5, demanding the immediate operationalisation of the facility.
The demonstrators, dressed in red and black, expressed frustration over the continued closure of the hospital, which they claim has been completed for about two years.
According to them, the delay is worsening access to healthcare for children, increasing pressure on nearby facilities, and in some cases contributing to preventable deaths.
They are calling on authorities to urgently commission and open the hospital for public use.
