The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has ordered the immediate evacuation of all residents living along the downstream stretch of the Weija Dam after all spill gates were opened to release excess water that has risen above safe operating levels.
Ghana Water Limited confirmed on Thursday, May 28, 2026, that the dam’s water level had climbed above the maximum operating threshold of 48 feet, making controlled spillage necessary to protect the dam’s structural integrity and prevent a potential disaster.
The release of water has already triggered flooding in several downstream communities, submerging homes and shops and forcing residents to move their belongings to safer locations.
Speaking to journalists in Accra, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo explained that the decision followed persistent heavy rains and rising inflows into the dam.
“Against this background, the Regional Security Council, after the press conference, will undertake an inspection exercise to assess the level of destruction and evacuate affected persons,” she said.
Ghana Water Limited noted that controlled spillage is a routine safety measure during the rainy season, especially when water levels exceed 45 feet, to reduce pressure on the dam.
The company further warned that forecasts from the Ghana Meteorological Agency indicate continued heavy rainfall upstream, which could further increase inflows. It added that spillage will continue until water levels return to a safe range, a process that could last several months depending on rainfall patterns.
“In view of this development, all persons living along the course of the river downstream of the dam are strongly advised to evacuate vulnerable areas immediately to forestall any eventuality and ensure the safety of lives and property,” the statement from Ghana Water Limited read.
The statement also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and local assemblies to urgently clear structures and obstructions along waterways to improve flow into the sea and reduce flood risks.
The Regional Minister assured residents that the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council will continue working with stakeholders to safeguard lives and property throughout the rainy season.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take all necessary interventions to ensure safety and wellbeing,” she added.
Ghana Water Limited urged full public cooperation with all emergency directives as authorities step up response measures.
