The Ghana Football Association (GFA) says it moved quickly to retain Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars head coach to meet key deadlines ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the appointment had to be expedited because the association needed to begin preparations, including sending invitations to players for the upcoming matches.
Ghana will open their qualifying campaign on 24 September against Ivory Coast in Bouake before hosting The Gambia three days later.
Queiroz, 73, initially took charge of the Black Stars on a short-term contract in April after Otto Addo was dismissed. He subsequently guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup, their first appearance in the last 32 since 2010.
The Portuguese coach has now agreed to continue in the role, although some contractual and administrative matters are still being finalised.
“There is a timeframe within which you have to send an invitation to the players, and you can do that when there is a head coach at the helm,” Asante Twum told 3Sports.
“So we need to fast-track the process and go through all the needed arrangements to be able to meet the timelines.”
He said Queiroz had indicated his willingness to remain in charge and that the outstanding issues were minor.
“Eventually, he [Carlos Queiroz] said yes. He was willing to continue. What is left are minor details to iron out, which we are currently working on,” he added.
Asante Twum also revealed that Queiroz had already begun preparations for the AFCON qualifiers and was expected to announce his squad before travelling to Ghana.
“I’m sure he will announce the squad before he arrives, but he has been working since we ended the World Cup,” he said.
Ghana face a challenging qualifying group that also includes Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia, with the Black Stars aiming to secure a place at the 2027 tournament in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
