Jordan Ayew is expected to be included in Ghana’s squad for this month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers despite currently being without a club.
The 34-year-old captained the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup in North America and is a key figure in the national team setup.
Ayew became a free agent after leaving Leicester City following the club’s relegation to League One.
He made 42 Championship appearances during the 2025-26 season, scoring six goals and providing three assists, while starting 24 league matches.
The former Aston Villa and Swansea City forward has been linked with a move to Cyprus side APOEL Nicosia and Championship club Blackburn Rovers, although both clubs have denied making an approach for him.
Ayew is now reportedly expected to join Championship side Sheffield United as a free agent, and he is expected to be unveiled on Friday, September 11, when he turns 35.
The experienced forward has spent more than a decade playing in English football, having also represented Crystal Palace in the Premier League after beginning his European career with French club Marseille.
A move to Sheffield United would strengthen his club prospects ahead of the Black Stars’ AFCON qualifying campaign, with Ayew expected to return to the national team squad.
Ghana will begin their qualifiers away against Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on 24 September, before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.
Having failed to qualify for the previous AFCON tournament in Morocco, the Black Stars will be determined to secure a return to Africa’s premier international competition.
