Voting in the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election has officially ended, with electoral officials now sorting and counting ballots at polling stations across the constituency.

Polling commenced at 7:00 a.m. and closed at 5:00 p.m., concluding a day-long exercise to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of the sitting MP, Naser Toure.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana is expected to declare the results later today.

Five candidates are contesting the seat:

  • Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed – National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Baba Ali Yusif – New Patriotic Party (NPP)
  • Umar Sanda Mohammed – Independent candidate
  • David Kanor – Independent candidate
  • Ibrahim Iddrisu – Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG)

The polls were largely peaceful and devoid of violence, although voter turnout was reported to be low in several polling stations. A strong police presence was deployed to maintain law and order, while party agents and supporters closely monitored the counting process.

Both the NDC and NPP candidates expressed optimism about their chances, with supporters of the two major parties confident of securing victory in the closely contested by-election.
