The United States Ambassador to Ghana has called for stronger measures to protect athletes from human trafficking ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking at the National Forum on Trafficking Through Sports at the ISSER Conference Hall, Legon, on Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Ambassador said many young athletes are becoming targets for criminal networks through fake sports opportunities abroad.
Representing the US Department of State, Rolf Olson said stricter monitoring of sports academies and recruitment processes is needed to protect vulnerable athletes.
According to him, major sporting events such as the World Cup can create opportunities for traffickers to deceive young people with false promises.
“Programs like this reflect our shared commitment to combating human trafficking and ensuring that the legitimate aspirations of young athletes are not exploited by criminal networks,” he stated.
Mr. Olson also warned Ghanaians against individuals who promise visas or guaranteed travel opportunities for the tournament.
He stressed that no agent can influence the outcome of a visa application and advised travellers to follow only official procedures.
He further noted that buying a World Cup ticket does not automatically guarantee entry into the United States.
Mr. Olson reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to working with Ghana and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to prevent trafficking in sports and protect young talents.
