A 29-year-old man from Breman Asikuma in the Central region has been battling elephantiasis for the past eight years.

Aziz Entsie is facing a very serious stigmatisation daily by family members and people in the community due to the deformity which started after he felt a sharp pain in the affected leg eight years ago.
Adom News’ Central Regional correspondent, Alfred Amoh, who followed the story, reported that, Aziz is immobile and his leg burns like fire.
He noted that his mother, who helped him with daily chores, died last year making life unbearable for the young man.
Alfred Amoh noted that, virtually immobile, pain is etched on Aziz’s face as he struggles to walk.
What has made the issue murkier, he said, is that the young man can no longer buy food outside or board public transport due to stigma.
“I cry all night as a result of severe pain, the hope of regaining back my leg keeps fading out, I wish I’m dead,” Aziz told Alfred in an interview.

Elephantiasis is a severe manifestation of lymphatic filariasis, a disease which can also trigger extensive scrotal swelling, or hydrocele, in men. It is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and is endemic in many countries according to World Health Organisation report about the disease on its website.
The infection is transmitted between humans by mosquitoes carrying tiny, thread-like worms, which nest in and attack a person’s lymphatic system – though many of those infected with the parasite will not present any symptom.
